Fence broken
Cats and squirrels
climb through

Leonard sings,
"There's a crack in everything.
That's how the light gets in."

In the territory twixt sleep and waking, it came to me as these gifts often do - "Beyond the Realm of Om and Meow." That was years ago and I still find the phrase magical and transporting. Ramping up for Poetry in San Miguel de Allende, the gifts have been flowing.


I snapped the photo of the gift giver graffiti on a corner near downtown Oakland on my way to work.

 Rooftop Rain

Rooftop Rain is sounding board
for rain filtered through
bare plum branches
syncopating above the rafters.

Drops caught
gathering secondary momentum
spilling off freckled bark
landing with short trajectory plops.

I can hear the difference
between cloud-thrown
and tree-sent
between foreign and domestic.

Next Fall, when the tree is pruned,
It will change the rain song.
